*update*

as of the start of 2017, we’ve upgraded our camera equipment big time !
we are now the proud owners of a canon 5D mark IV, with a canon 50mm f1.2 lens.

we are over the moon happy with our new babies, and can’t wait to get to know it better ^.^
the quality difference is just amazing, and that means that we have to edit the lighting,, contrast and colour balance way less. plus the sharpness is just out of this world.

oh you guys – we just reached one million views on youtube !

can you imagine that people clicked on our videos more than one million times ? it feels mad strange.

so to celebrate i’m giving you the lowdown on the equipment we use to produce our videos !
you’ve been asking a lot so this is a long time coming, sorry for keeping those of you interested waiting for this long.

camera equipment
our camera equipment isn’t all that expensive. we’re looking forward to upgrading as we go along, but at the same time we’re really happy with the equipment we’ve got for the price we paid.

our camera is a canon 600D. we bought it used in great condition for about €250, which is crazy good !
it’s a great camera, we’ve always liked canon. a plus with this model is that it has a flip screen, something we find incredibly useful when shooting video, so that’s a big tip !

we’ve got two lenses. one tamron 17-50 mm, f2.8, which cost us about £350. i’d really recommend a zoom lens for video shooting, since fixed lenses will usually make it difficult to shoot talking sequences in small indoor spaces. we’re very happy with the tamron lens.

we’e also got a budget version of a canon 50mm f1.8 lens, which only cost us £45. this is excellent for shooting beautiful close ups of food etc, and we’re totally happy with it for the price we paid. the only negative thing is that this lens doesn’t have the best auto focus when using it for still photography. i’m used to it now, but it’s definitely not the best in this regard. but hey, what can we expect for that price huh ?

besides the camera equipment, we also have a standard tripod, a cheap reflector screen, and a clip-on microphone. the mic isn’t that good, so can’t recommend the brand really.

other than that we have an extra battery to the camera, two extra SD cards, and of course chargers etc.

editing programs
when it comes to videos, we use premiere pro CS6 for editing. we love it, it’s the best program we’ve tried. it’s very easy to grasp if you’re used to other adobe programs like photoshop ( what i use to edit my photos ). david has a 3 year university education in film production, so he learned to edit in school. but i don’t have any education at all, and have still learned to use premiere pro surprisingly quickly, with david’s tutoring.

for graphics we use after effects CS6. i shouldn’t say ‘we’ cause this is all on david. haven’t even tried to learn it, i’m not that into graphics. he’s very happy with it, and it works perfectly in combination with premiere pro. there really isn’t a program quite like it out there for graphics, so if you’re into all that, after effects is the way to go.

to tweak the sound in our videos, we’ve just started using audition CS6. we mostly use it for noise reduction, and it works like a charm.

of course, these adobe programs are pricey. not for the hobby video maker i reckon. but since we do this professionally we feel like these programs are worth every cent spent. and i believe you can get a super good discounted price if you’re a student, so it might be worth looking into that.

music
we are signed with a swedish youtube network, and one of the perks of that is that we get a license for the amazing music library website epidemic sound. they have like a trillion songs and sounds, and we just love it. they’re seriously the best.

it’s really expensive to get a license as a regular person though, so in that case i’d recommend just using youtube’s own audio library ( like we did before epidemic sound ). it’s not the greatest ever, but it’s growing. also, we used to borrow a lot of josh woodward’s music in our earlier videos. he has a lot of great calm acoustic guitar songs you can use as long as you link back to him.

i think that was it.
will update this blog post whenever we get any new toys or tricks. let me know if you have any questions or anything !

and if you’re more into still photography, you can check out this post where i talk about my top 3 editing tips for food photos.

love // jenny
