RECIPE : tofu & veggie skewers with a spicy coffee chocolate sauce | malawi coffee blog party

this is an exciting blog post for me, i’m joining my very first blog party ! so this lovely coffee chocolate sauce is actually a part of a bigger picture.

i’ve joined 11 other talented food bloggers to spread the word about the extreme poverty in malawi, and to try to support the coffee producers from the country. the idea is to put malawi coffee on the map. it’s great coffee, just not as well-known as kenyan, colombian or brazilian for example.

now i don’t even drink coffee, but those of you who do – make it malawi coffee next time won’t you ?

fellow swede hans rosling hosts the very informational and strangely entertaining short doc called don’t panic – end poverty ( in english ) that i highly recommend you watch if you haven’y already. it was after watching that programme that one of my favourite food bloggers kimberly from the little plantation came up with the idea to host this blog party, and i’m so happy that she did !
as my online ‘voice’ gets more and more heard, i’ve been meaning to put it to use for campaigns to do good, and this seems like a great place to start.

tofu and veggie skewers with a spicy coffee chocolate sauce
makes 2 radicchio skewers, and 4 each of the tofu and brussels sprout skewers

skewers
1 head of radicchio, quartered ( very bitter, substitute for endive or escarole if you want )
8-10 brussels sprouts, halved
about 400g / 14oz firm tofu, cut in large squares
sesame seeds
salt & pepper
a tiny bit of oil for frying, if needed

sauce
about 60g / 2 oz vegan very dark chocolate ( i used baking chocolate which is 100% cacao, unsweetened )
1/4 – 1/2 tsp very finely ground malawi coffee
1-2 tsp chili flakes
2 tsp date sugar ( or your preferred sweetener. only use if the chocolate isn’t already sweetened )
3 tbsp peanut butter
a pinch of salt

– set your oven to broil / grill. place the radicchio and brussels sprouts on skewers. when the oven is heated, grill radicchio and sprouts with some salt and pepper on a parchment paper until somewhat softened and golden browned.
– fry the tofu with salt, pepper and a sprinkle of sesame seeds on medium high heat in a bit of oil ( if needed ) until golden brown on each side. place them on skewers, being careful not to burn yourself.

– slowly heat the chocolate until melted. add the rest of the ingredients over medium heat, and stir until completely smooth. give it a taste and add more chili, coffee, or sweetener if needed.
– place the skewers on a plate and drizzle with the sauce. garnish with a sprinkle of sesame seeds and more chili flakes if you want. the sauce is also delicious as a dipping sauce for both savoury and sweet dishes !
